That first poem is very powerful, Stuart. Sometimes I think that as queer people we are under pressure to hold to the “It gets better mantra”, and avoid the difficult conversations about anything that is less than perfect about the ways we sometimes treat one another.

Thanks very much, Joe. Yes, I agree. I believe it’s vital that we have these sorts of difficult conversations, which is why I’ve always written about my own/others’ experiences. I’m very glad of It Gets Better and similar projects, but hope for greater openness, compassion and inclusivity in queer communities.
